- 01Weightlifting
Five days a week I wake up at 5:45am to hit the gym. It’s a foundational routine that sets the tone for the rest of my day and keeps me disciplined. I currently follow a push/pull/legs split and love jamming out to music while I’m there.
- 02Pickleball
I recently started playing pickleball and have fully succumbed to PAS (pickleball addiction syndrome). If you’re ever in the Stanford area and want to play a match, let me know!
- 03Bouldering
I started bouldering in high school, but lost the time to hit the wall during undergrad. At the start of my PhD I made it non-negotiable again, and now I go about three times a week.
- 04Chess
I’m not very good—I tend to resign as soon as I make a bad move—but chess is a great way to scratch the itch to game while staying cognitively engaged.
- 05Music
I’ve recently started messing around in Ableton, trying to make beats. I mostly listen to EDM (trance, dubstep, breakcore, techno) and try to pull inspiration across those genres—drawing a bit on neuroscience and the dopaminergic system—to make something euphoric and entrancing.
- 06Running
When I need a break from the gym, I go for a run—another way to keep moving and stay healthy.
- 07Reading
I mostly read nonfiction (autobiographies, self-improvement, philosophy), with the occasional dip into fiction. Favorites include Crime and Punishment, The Four Agreements, and Into the Magic Shop.
- 08YouTube
I like digging into philosophy, video essays, and science content on YouTube. Favorite channels include Exurb1a, Kurzgesagt, and 3Blue1Brown.
- 09Travel
When time allows, travel is one of my favorite things to do. Places I’ve loved visiting include the Philippines, Peru, and Brazil—I’m drawn to cultures very different from what I usually experience; that contrast is an important perspective on life. High on the list next: China, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Australia.
- 10Hiking
Observing the beauty and absurdity of nature gives me time to reflect on how wonderful this world is
